How a Wash Works

How your rug moves through our atelier.

Inspected and dye-tested first, hand-washed in cool water, dried flat and returned.

01

Inspected and dusted by hand.

Every rug is examined by hand and each color is dye-tested before any water is used, then the dry grit is dusted out of the foundation. Most of what dulls a rug is soil deep in the base, and it comes out dry, not in the wash.

02

Hand-washed in cool water.

The rug is washed by hand in cool, temperature-controlled water with a soap matched to its fiber and dyes, the soil flushed out rather than scrubbed in. No heat, no machine, no steam, and never cleaned in place on your floor.

03

Dried flat, groomed, returned.

Rinsed until the water runs clear, dried flat over days with air on both sides, then groomed and finished by hand. The rug is returned to your home in better condition than the day it left.

The Full Atelier

Cleaning is where most rugs start.

A wash is the first thing most rugs need, and often the only thing. But the same hands that clean your rug also repair and restore it, so nothing has to leave the atelier to be made whole.

When a rug needs more than a wash, we also do rug repair, full restoration, color restoration, and moth treatment. If you are not sure what your rug needs, send a photo and we will tell you honestly, inspected by hand before any work begins.

Common Questions

Questions, honestly answered.

What clients ask us before they hand over a rug — and how we answer.

What is professional rug cleaning?
Professional rug cleaning is a full, off-site hand-wash of a rug by people trained to handle the fiber and dyes of a specific piece, as opposed to running a machine over it on the floor. At our atelier it means the rug is inspected and dye-tested, dusted of its dry soil, hand-washed in cool water matched to the fiber, rinsed until clear, and dried flat. It is the difference between cleaning a rug and simply wetting it, and it is the only method appropriate for a hand-knotted or valuable rug.
How are rugs cleaned professionally?
A rug is inspected and every color dye-tested, then the dry grit is dusted out of the foundation before any water is used. The rug is hand-washed in cool, temperature-controlled water with a soap matched to its fiber and dyes, the soil flushed out rather than scrubbed in, rinsed until the water runs clear, and dried flat over days with air on both sides. No heat, no machine, no steam, and never cleaned in place on your floor. It is slow, deliberate work, and it is what keeps a good rug lasting generations.
Do you clean the rug in my home, or take it away?
We take it away. A rug cannot be truly cleaned in place, because on the floor the water has nowhere to drain, the underside never dries, and the dyes are never tested first. We wrap and pick up the rug, clean it by hand in our atelier, dry it flat under controlled conditions, and return it. Complimentary pickup and return mean the rug is the only thing that has to move.
Can you clean any type of rug?
Yes. We clean every kind of rug and every fiber: hand-knotted oriental and Persian rugs, wool and silk, antique and vintage pieces, flatweaves, kilims and dhurries, and modern or machine-made rugs. The wash is matched to the construction and dyes of your particular rug rather than run as one process for everything. If you already know your rug's type, we have a dedicated page built around each.
